Do you know “The Climb”?

Just Between Us,

You know “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus, right? Have you listened to it recently? Isn’t it weird that songs from our childhood are arguably even more relatable now than back then? I listened to it today and somehow the lyrics perfectly encompass what I’ve been struggling with recently.

Mental health, in the words of Miley, is a climb. It isn’t about being “healed” or “fixed” because having  mental health issues doesn’t make you broken. There is no end, there is no top of the mountain. It’s a journey that you have to embark on everyday. Some days you’ll make miles of progress, but some days you’ll stumble and fall backwards. Sometimes you will feel on top of the world and sometimes you won’t be able to get out of bed. Remember everyday that you fight this battle, everyday that you continue up the mountain, everyday that you focus on the climb that you are strong, capable, and worthy. Remember that while no two people’s journeys are the same, you are never alone.

I am on this climb too. I’m realizing that the further up you climb, the brighter it gets. The higher you go, the less the shadow is looming over you. While I am starting to feel the heat of the sun on my face, I’m still struggling with slipping and sliding backwards into the shadows. I think that is always going to be a part of the journey. I also think it’s important to get back up and regain that lost ground. Take time for yourself, prioritize your feelings, remember it’s okay to not be the absolute best at everything. You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to fight for your happiness and well being.

I’m rooting for both of us,

-M
